La Piera del Bando. V.
From the series Vedute altre prese da i luoghi altre ideate (Venice: Giovanni Battista Pasquali, 2nd edition 1754/55-59)
Canaletto (Giovanni Antonio Canal), Italian (active Venice, Rome, and England), 1697 - 1768. Dedicated to Joseph Smith, British (active Venice), c. 1682 - 1770.
In this view of the Piazzetta San Marco, Canaletto illustrates the Piera (or Pietra) del Bando, located next to a column of the portico of the Basilica of San Marco. This fragment of ancient porphyry column (lower left), looted from Genoa during a thirteenth-century battle, was used as a proclamation stone from which important decrees were read.
