A Scene from Aristophanes’s Lysistrata
Drawing for "Lysistrata"
Pablo Ruiz y Picasso, Spanish, 1881 - 1973
Here, two warriors shake hands—one Spartan and the other Athenian—marking the end of the Peloponnesian War (431–404 BCE). The artist set this scene against the Mediterranean Sea under a blazing sun. Picasso made this drawing while blindfolded in order to create a spontaneous interpretation of the famous play.
