Setting Sail from a Port in California in America

1862
Utagawa Sadahide (Japanese, c. 1807–1873) Published by Etsu Ka (?) Engraved by Asai Chōjirō (Asachō) (?)
An imaginary rather than topographical view of the California coast, this print indicates Japan's awareness of what was at the time America's westernmost state; the first Japanese embassy to the United States landed at San Francisco in March of 1860.
