Death of Dido

1600-1640
Francesco Albani (Italian, 1578–1660)
The traditional attribution of this etching to Albani, a painter who made no other prints, has been doubted by some art historians. The confused and unsystematic hatching, technical problems, and awkward composition all suggest that this print was made by a painter unfamiliar with the etching process, but the artist's identity remains uncertain.
