America (American Woman on Horseback in the Snow)

1860
Utagawa Hiroshige II (Japanese, 1826–1869) Published by Jōshūya Jūzō, Kinjūdō Engraved by Hori Yasu (?)
Representations of America often included a woman wearing a type of feathered hat vaguely resembling a pineapple-like crown, a bizarre fashion accessory that was apparently inspired by a profile on a U.S. coin. Illustrations of Native Americans wearing feathered headdresses may also have served as sources of inspiration for this hat style.
