A Russian Woman and an Englishman

1860
Utagawa Yoshiiku (Japanese, 1833–1904) Published by Ōmiya Kyūjirō (Kinkyū) Engraved by Fukachō (?)
Although Japanese artists generally borrowed imagery from relatively current fashion plates and illustrations when depicting Western costumes, they were not always aware of the date when the original images were made. Occasionally the source an artist used to portray a supposedly contemporary foreign woman's attire was woefully outdated, such as the late eighteenth-century-style hat shown here.
