Saint Francis Renouncing the World for the Cloister

c. 1500
Artist/maker unknown, Netherlandish
Saint Francis sheds his luxurious clothes, which represent his worldly possessions, for a life of devout poverty. Here the bishop, and by extension the Church, wraps the saint in his own robes. Due to the thin layer of paint, the dark lines of the underdrawing from which the artist built this image are visible in many locations, as in Saint Francis’s calf.
