Modern and Contemporary Art Bather 1917 Jacques Lipchitz, American (born Lithuania), 1891 - 1973 Bronze Currently not on view 2003-230-1 Bequest of Mrs. Irving R. Segal, 2006 |
LabelThe modern forms of this Bather mask a classical subject: a nymphlike woman stepping into her bath, holding her drapery in her hands as she looks back over her shoulder. In his autobiography, Lipchitz likened this pose to similar works by the French sculptor Étienne-Maurice Falconet, perhaps having in mind that artist's famous marble sculpture The Bather (1757) in the Louvre, which Lipchitz visited often when he lived in Paris. |
