LabelThe Italian artist Gino Severini noted in his autobiography that La Modiste was made in Civray, a small town near Limoges in the southwest of France, where he spent the summers of 1910 and 1911. It was around this time that the artist began to experiment with Cubist techniques, as seen in this image where the flat, shifting foreground planes that compose the figure and her surroundings are repeated to indicate motion and energy. Although associated with the Salon Cubists, the artist would become better known as a Futurist painter after this work and seven others were displayed in the first Futurist exhibition in Paris in 1912.* Works in the collection are moved off view for many different reasons.
