Dr. McMunn's Kinate of Quinine and Cinchonine

c. 1862-1867
Artist/maker unknown, American Printed by Thomas & Eno, New York
Two of Dr. McMunn's products are prominently displayed near the bedside of a sick woman. Outside, men are harvesting the cinchona bark from which its major alkaloids, quinine and cinchonine, will be made. Despite the North American setting depicted, these natural ingredients were imported from Peru, where the cinchona tree grew.
