A label on the reverse of the frame, with the date 1950 or 1956, states that it belonged to Verna Shepard. Verna Edith VanDenberg was the ward of William Marriott Welch until her marriage to Francis Shepard in 1936. See New York Times, June 5, 1936, p. 18.
