Bagh Phulkari

Late 19th – early 20th century
Artist/maker unknown, Punjabi

Bagh (garden) references a type of phulkari whose surface is fully covered in embroidery. Time-consuming and expensive to make, baghs were treasured. Most often their designs are fully geometric, as in the case with the orderly zigzag to the right, but occasionally they show other imagery. Geometric designs dominate this unusual piece but it also displays detailed wedding jewelry and tiny, abstracted human and animal figures
