This view from just north of the town of New Hope, Pennsylvania, shows a hundred-year-old covered bridge that spans the Delaware River to New Jersey. Not far from Edward Redfield’s home in Center Bridge, the bridge appeared frequently in his work, from different perspectives and in different conditions. Here Redfield captured the grayed colors and feeble sunlight of a chilly midwinter day. During the summer of 1923, the bridge was struck by lightning and caught fire. Redfield rushed to the scene to capture the conflagration on canvas. Redfield’s version, The Burning of Center Bridge, resides at the James A. Michener Art Museum in Doylestown, Pennsylvania.
