Sacrifice of the Watermelon Virgin or Shirt Off Her Back

1987
Barkley L. Hendricks (American, 1945–2017) Published by Brandywine Workshop, Philadelphia
Hendricks is best known for his forthright, life-sized portrait paintings that focus on identity, style, and attitude. His subjects are typically people who are generally misrepresented, unacknowledged, or otherwise underappreciated by society at large. This concern carries over, albeit in a sardonic rather than affirmative way, in this print, with its blatant allusions to racial stereotypes and slurs.
