Two Children with a Lapdog

c. 1795
Raphaelle Peale (American, 1774–1825)
Raphaelle Peale is known for his miniature portraits and still-life pictures. This double portrait is a rare example of his work in a larger format. The young girl’s lapdog may have been her pet but it also likely symbolizes the children’s fidelity and gentleness toward one another.
