Untitled (Blue)

2004
Sam Gilliam (American, 1933–2022) Printed by Brandywine Workshop, Philadelphia Book published by Hudson Hills Press, New York and Manchester
Painter Sam Gilliam created this print for the deluxe edition of the book Three Decades of American Printmaking: The Brandywine Workshop Collection, which was published to commemorate the workshop’s thirtieth anniversary. In 1975, Gilliam was the first visiting artist to make prints at Brandywine. Visiting artist residencies (typically one or two weeks in length) became the core of the workshop’s programming. The residencies provide opportunities for both emerging and established artists to focus on printmaking, removed from other obligations and working in a supportive environment with a master printer for technical guidance. By actively seeking artists from outside and within Philadelphia, the workshop broadens the experience of its young interns and apprentices, as well as community audiences who participate in its educational programs.
