Woman's Cocktail Dress

Fall 1995
Designed by Oscar de la Renta (American and Dominican, 1932–2014)
This dress epitomizes the ultra-feminine sensibilities of Oscar de la Renta. Sheer tulle gracefully covers the shoulders and lace forms a scalloped neckline and slim torso. The full skirt is covered with rows of serpentine and three-dimensional ribbon ruffles, and is supported by five diaphanous underskirts. Oscar de la Renta grew up in the Dominican Republic and studied in Madrid; he worked in Paris before moving in 1963 to New York, where he founded his own company in 1967. De la Renta blends European luxury- including beautiful fabrics, ornamentation, and details-with American ease, all with the aim of making a woman look her best.
