This straightforward still life of apples, grapes, and a single pear overflowing a simply decorated ceramic bowl is apparently a copy Anna Peale Sellers painted from an earlier composition created by her grand-uncle James Peale in 1825 (now in the collection of the Munson Williams Proctor Arts Institute, New York). Artistic instruction among the Peales was often a family affair and this still life was also copied by Sellers’s uncle Rubens Peale and aunt Harriet Cany Peale. Sellers studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia, and produced both original compositions as well as highly finished reproductions like this one that were likely meant for sale.
