Nandalal Bose (Indian, 1882–1966)

This image depicts the Chaiti at the center of the village of Santiniketan, where Bose was director of Kala Bhavana, the fine arts school that was part of Tagore’s university. The Chaiti, a glass case used for changing exhibitions, stood in a brick-and-mud, shrine-like structure that Bose had designed. In Bose’s delicate rendering, the Chaiti is partially hidden by a large tree whose spindly branches are cleanly truncated by the edges of the etching plate.
