European Decorative Arts and Sculpture Chanfron (headpiece for a horse) Made in the Ottoman Empire, Anatolia, Asiac. 1580 Artist/maker unknown, Ottoman Embossed and engraved steel * Gallery 248, Arms and Armor, second floor (Kretzschmar von Kienbusch Galleries) 2011-56-1 Purchased with the Walter E. Stait Fund and the Fiske and Marie Kimball Fund, 2011 |
LabelThe inscription raises the possibility that this chanfron, and a comparable example bearing an analogous inscription, now in the Musée du Louvre, Paris, were made for armed retainers of the Ottoman jurist, administrator, and military commander Murad Pasha (died 1611). Pasha was a notable patron of the arts whose remarkable career culminated with his promotion to grand vizier in 1606.* Works in the collection are moved off view for many different reasons.
