Chanfron (headpiece for a horse)

c. 1580
Artist/maker unknown, Ottoman
The inscription raises the possibility that this chanfron, and a comparable example bearing an analogous inscription, now in the Musée du Louvre, Paris, were made for armed retainers of the Ottoman jurist, administrator, and military commander Murad Pasha (died 1611). Pasha was a notable patron of the arts whose remarkable career culminated with his promotion to grand vizier in 1606.
