My Child! My Child!

1832
Henry Edward Dawe (British, 1790–1848) Published by H. Dawe, 6 Bartholomew Place, Kentish Town Retailed by R. Ackermann, Strand, London (British (born Germany), 1764–1834) , and Charles Tilt, Fleet Street, London (active c. 1815–1853)
Henry Dawe’s melodramatic image, one of a pair, had a long history of popularity in the United States. First printed in London in 1830 and then re-engraved by the artist on larger plates two years later, the compositions were immediately pirated by American publishers. Recycled through various gift books in the 1830s and 1840s, the subjects were soon copied on ceramic vases. A new set of engraved plates appeared in the 1850s, followed by a pair of lithographs by Currier & Ives.
