They're Saved! They're Saved!

1832
Henry Edward Dawe (British, 1790–1848) Published by H. Dawe, 6 Bartholomew Place, Kentish Town Retailed by R. Ackermann, Strand, London (British (born Germany), 1764–1834) , and Charles Tilt, Fleet Street, London (active c. 1815–1853)
Henry Dawe described his subject as an intrepid British seaman swooping down to save a woman and her child from a watery grave. The sailor turns away so that the limp and helpless woman becomes the emotional center of the composition. Muscular, selfless, and anonymous, the man becomes the model of the mysterious hero.
