Double Tiger Claw Brooch

19th century
Artist/maker unknown, Indian
In India, tiger-claw necklaces are traditionally worn by boys and young men as protection and to express power. However, the setting of these claws as a brooch and the incised floral design reflects European influence. In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, British residents and visitors to India often commissioned or purchased such tradition-inspired ornaments and brought them back to Europe as souvenirs.
