In #53, Victor Schrager uses depth of field, lighting, and composition to explore the interplay of representation and abstraction in photography. Schrager renders one of the carefully arranged books in penetrating detail, using its oblique angle to emphasize a sense of spatial recession. The other book melts away, turning the photograph into two complimentary color fields. The right side of this picture suggests that photographs describe objects and space; the left side conveys the idea that photographs are color and form arranged within a frame. Schrager holds the representational and abstract qualities of photography in a state of ambiguity.
