Alice Kent Stoddard (American, 1883–1976)

In this sparkling portrait of Aurelia Brown (known to her friends as “Thistle”), painted with impressionist color and light, Alice Stoddard demonstrates her kinship with the work of contemporaries such as Robert Henri (American, 1865–1929). A graduate of the Philadelphia School of Design for Women (now Moore College of Art & Design) and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia, Stoddard was a favored portraitist of the city’s elite in the early twentieth century. Best known for her sober paintings of dignitaries, she must have enjoyed this more playful subject. Brown grew up to become a much-loved artist and gallery owner in Northeast Harbor, Maine.
