notation in x, y, z

2015
Tanya Goel (Indian, born 1985)

Inspired by architecture and the environment expressed through a deep investigation of color, Tanya Goel’s works compose ordered landscapes that intimately combine material and units of measure. Bearing such titles as field, index, and notation, Goel’s works map and uncover her surrounding urban landscape in a way that makes the textures, disruptions, and fissures of the physical world both visible and tangible.

notations in x, y, z features a textured grid of handmade pigments created from debris collected in the artist’s native city of New Delhi. Each color is marked with Goel’s scribbled inscriptions to denote the geographic coordinates of her findings. The resulting canvas is an archive of compiled materials and an alternative blueprint to the city’s rapidly changing structures.

Also on view on the opposite side of the gallery is Goel’s site-specific drawing, Index V, made from an indigo industrial pigment and pulverized bricks applied directly onto the wall using a snap line—a common construction tool for measurement. Influenced by the scientific concept of "Deep Time," or geological time, as well as the rains of Delhi’s monsoon season, Goel’s ordered lines directly correlate to the world’s changing sea levels, forming a record of their rise and fall over time as well as an abstract meditation on nature and urban cycles.
