Museum records state that this dish is "believed to be a trial piece designed by K. Notomi." Notomi Kaijiro (1844–1918) was an artist who exhibited at the 1873 Vienna World's Fair and was commissioned to make drawings for ceramic objects to be displayed at the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition of 1876. He also served as an award judge for the ceramics section.
