Fukagawa Eizaemon VIII (Japanese, 1833–1889)

The underglaze blue color on these vases is obtained from the mineral cobalt. From the 1870s on, man-made cobalt became popular because of its lower cost, although some potters may have continued to use the natural cobalt for important pieces.
