Dish

1786
Made by Georg Hübener (American, 1757–1828)

Inscribed (translation): 1786 G. H. From the earth with sense the potter makes everything. Cadarina Raeder, her dish.

German-speaking immigrants to Pennsylvania maintained the artistic traditions they brought from Europe, often retaining art forms and styles over several generations. This dish features decoration made using the centuries-old sgraffito technique, achieved by cutting through a slip coating to expose the red clay underneath. The verse in German around the border, extolling the skill of the potter, also shows an adherence to tradition: language provided an immediate means of holding onto ethnic identity. With such rich ornamentation, this dish was clearly not intended for use.
