American Art Portrait of Mary Adeline Williams Made in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States, North and Central Americac. 1900 Thomas Eakins, American, 1844 - 1916 Oil on canvas * Gallery 118, American Art, first floor (Provident National Bank Gallery) 1929-184-10 Gift of Mrs. Thomas Eakins and Miss Mary Adeline Williams, 1929 |
LabelAfter the death of Eakins's father in December 1899, Eakins and his wife invited Addie Williams to come live with them. She did and remained a member of the household for almost four decades. Shortly after she moved in, Eakins painted this work, projecting more vitality, both in the sitter's expression and in the choice of her costume, than in his earlier painting of her. The stripes of her blouse, rendered in energetic strokes of orange-red paint, become another element in expressing character and mood.* Works in the collection are moved off view for many different reasons. Although gallery locations on the website are updated regularly, there is no guarantee that this object will be on display on the day of your visit. |
