Portrait of J. Harry Lewis

1876
Thomas Eakins (American, 1844–1916)
J. Harry Lewis (1840–1909) grew up a block from the Eakins house at 1729 Mount Vernon Street, Philadelphia, and he frequently joined the artist on his hunting and sailing expeditions. Evidently a patient and trusting friend, Lewis posed for his portrait with an unusually direct gaze, unlike the dreamy and evasive sitters often seen in other portraits by Eakins.
