Sketch for "The Gross Clinic"

1875
Thomas Eakins (American, 1844–1916)
In planning the complex elements of his monumental painting The Gross Clinic, Eakins made a number of oil sketches, including portrait studies of Dr. Samuel D. Gross and several of the assistants and students depicted in the amphitheater. In this surviving sketch, Eakins organized the major compositional elements of the painting, the critical relationships between the light and dark tones, and the touches of bright red.
