Ni Zan was considered the archetype of the Yuan dynasty literati painter. His dry brush and spare painting style, in which he pared all the elements down to their essence, became a primary model for both Chinese and Japanese literati painters. The inscription at the top narrates the event depicted: the solitary monk who wandered through the Buddhist grottoes at Longmen.
