This portrait of teacher and critic Leslie W. Miller (1848–1931), principal of the School of Industrial Art in Philadelphia (now The University of the Arts), was extremely well received and exhibited frequently after its completion. Miller felt honored by the painting—Eakins gave it to him—but he did object to the ordinariness of his clothing, which he said Eakins required him to wear. Of such informality, he wrote: "But all that is part of the Eakins hallmark and of course it cannot be spared. He was one of the great ones and I value the picture highly."
