LabelShortly before his death in 1896, Arts and Crafts movement leader William Morris (British, 1834-1896) invited Evans to photograph the sixteenth-century summer home that figured into his writing and influenced his art. Evans likely returned to Kelmscott Manor after Morris's passing in order to produce a more complete photographic representation of the structure. He created a number of views of the attic, deftly using natural light to describe the rough-hewn timbers and to call attention to their striking geometry. The graceful angles of the roof beams recall the soaring arches of Gothic cathedrals depicted in Evans's photographs of church interiors.* Works in the collection are moved off view for many different reasons.
