Shawl

c. 1867
Artist/maker unknown, Indian
Combining French and Indian influences in its strong graphics and delicate detailing, this innovatively designed Indian shawl is dominated by its central wheel-spoke pattern surrounded by French-style drapery, graceful flowering plants that recall Mughal examples, and small arches that enclose pairs of botehs - or paisley designs - facing trees of life.
