Clear Sailing

1880
Winslow Homer (American, 1836–1910)
Homer spent much of the summer of 1880 lodging with the lighthouse keeper on Ten Pound Island in the middle of Gloucester, Massachusetts’s busy harbor. From this isolated vantage, the graceful vessels of the fishing fleet and the idle boys who watch from the rocks are suffused with a sense of nostalgia and serenity.
