LabelKanö Högai was a disciple of the Kanö school, academic court painters for more than four hundred years. The art historian Ernest F. Fenollosa (1853-1908), one of Högai's closest friends and patrons, was the original owner of this hanging scroll. This is a very important example of Högai's later work. He uses Kanö-school lines and styles, with the Western influence of the realistic style introduced by Fenollosa, especially in the depiction of the pheasant. |
