Laziness

1896
Félix Vallotton (Swiss, 1865–1925)
In this depiction of a quiet moment amid the hustle and bustle of modern life, Félix Vallotton uses a smooth, languid line to set off the forms of the woman and cat against a dramatic multiplicity of pattern. Inspired by the many Japanese woodcuts he collected, Vallotton explores strategies for emphasizing flatness and manipulating the repetition of shapes.
