Vallotton belonged to a group of late-nineteenth-century painters interested in color and pattern who became enthusiastic printmakers. Unlike Pierre Bonnard and Edouard Vuillard-members of the group who made their reputation with color prints-Vallotton favored the black-and-white woodcut. Here he sets a languid nude against a background of patterned fabrics and pillows.
