Back in Paris from his first trip to Tahiti, in 1893–94 Gauguin created a series of rough-hewn woodcuts that replicated the exotic subject matter of the paintings that he made while away. Here the woodblock has been double-printed slightly off-register, a technique Gauguin used to heighten the mystery of his imagery.
