LabelThis lantern follows a model that was originally commissioned in wood by William, fifth earl of Dumfries, for Dumfries House, Ayrshire, Scotland. In 1762, Chippendale included an image of the lantern in the third edition of his book Gentleman and Cabinet Maker's Director.* Works in the collection are moved off view for many different reasons.
