LabelThis sculptural group originally stood over the entrance to the choir or altar area of a church, supported by a massive, wooden (rood) beam or screen. Thus, the group would have occupied the center of the nave and faced the congregation. The central image of the suffering Jesus relates to the saying of Mass at the altar, the Christian rite that celebrates Jesus' sacrifice for the salvation of mankind.* Works in the collection are moved off view for many different reasons. Although gallery locations on the website are updated regularly, there is no guarantee that this object will be on display on the day of your visit. |
