Morning Light, Interior

1923
Daniel Garber (American, 1880–1958)

Daniel Garber moved his family from Bucks County to Philadelphia when he began teaching at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. This painting depicts the parlor of their house at 1819 Green Street, not far from the academy and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. His daughter Tanis, now several years older than when she appeared in another work titled Tanis, served as a model, although the true subject of the painting is morning light and its effects on the surfaces in the room.

The frame on this painting was made by Garber’s friend, Frederick Harer.
