LabelIn late August 1925 the American painter Marsden Hartley signed a yearlong lease on a four-room stucco house known as La Petite Maison, in Vence, just a few miles inland from Nice and the heart of the French Riviera. Hartley hoped to follow in the footsteps of earlier artists like Paul Cézanne and Vincent van Gogh by exploring the physicality of the sunbaked landscape of the south of France. In this painting, the olive trees are rendered with a flurry of loose, rapid brushstrokes and the high-keyed palette imbues the landscape with a palpable sense of movement and energy. |
