LabelFrom its opening in 1883 until well into the twentieth century, the Brooklyn Bridge retained its identity as a symbol of modern ingenuity. Marin first etched the bridge in 1911, soon after his return from Europe. The last time he used the bridge as a subject for an etching was 1944. By focusing on the entrance rather than on the span of the bridge, Marin calls attention to its architectural similarity with the portals of Gothic churches in Europe. |
