Framed Handkerchief

1908-1909
Designed by Hector Guimard (French, 1867–1942)

Like many architects of the Art Nouveau period, Hector Guimard’s goal was to create environments that were total works of art and his wedding was no exception. He married Adeline Oppenheim, an American painter from a wealthy New York Jewish family, on February 17, 1909, in Paris. Guimard designed the couple’s wedding announcement, and at their marriage Mme. Guimard wore a dress designed by her husband and carried this handkerchief, which he had also designed. His building designs included not just the architecture but the interiors as well, including floor and wall coverings, light fixtures, door and window hardware, fireplaces, and furniture. Shortly after their marriage, Guimard acquired property at 122, avenue Mozart, where he built a large townhouse for the couple in which architecture and furniture were united by the same sinuous, organic lines that are stitched into this handkerchief.
