Dancers in the Wings

1879-1880
Hilaire-Germain-Edgar Degas (French, 1834–1917)
A cavern or grottolike setting was encountered in several late-nineteenth-century Opéra productions. This etching resembles the set for act II of the ballet Sylvia in which the heroine is trapped in a cave.
