Man with a Cane (First State)
Fernand Léger, French, 1881 - 1955
Léger met Piet Mondrian, (Dutch, 1872 - 1944) before the war, when both lived in Montparnasse. During the war, Mondrian lived in Holland, where he became involved with the De Stijl movement. Back in Paris in 1919, Mondrian’s palette changed dramatically to saturated primary colors like those favored by Léger.
